For victims of family-controlled human trafficking and complex, organized abuse, disclosure may be only the beginning of an extraordinarily complicated path toward safety.

Beyond the Disclosure brings together survivors, clinicians, child welfare professionals, advocates, and other multidisciplinary experts to examine what happens after abuse or exploitation comes to light—and what professionals need to understand in order to respond effectively.

What We’ll Cover

Beyond the Disclosure is designed to move participants from recognition to response—examining not only how family-controlled trafficking and organized abuse can present, but why these experiences are so often missed and what professionals need to understand once concerns or disclosures emerge.

Throughout the symposium, participants will explore:

Looking Below the Surface

Challenge traditional assumptions about what child trafficking “looks like” and examine the forms of exploitation that may remain hidden when abuse begins within the family, involves multiple offenders, or occurs within seemingly safe and respected homes and communities.

Family-Controlled Trafficking & Organized Abuse

Build a shared foundation for understanding family-controlled commercial sexual exploitation, organized abuse, and child sexual abuse material. Participants will examine caregiver control, system grooming, multiple-offender dynamics, and the child, family, and system-level patterns that may warrant further concern.

Coercive Control & Religious Authoritarian Parenting

Explore how coercive family systems can normalize submission, secrecy, isolation, and unquestioned parental authority. This session will examine Religious Authoritarian Parenting as one context in which coercive control may increase vulnerability to exploitation and organized abuse.

Forensic Interviewing Beyond the “Perfect Disclosure”

Consider how family control, prolonged trauma, attachment, dissociation, and fear can affect a child’s ability to provide information. Participants will explore how evidence-based forensic interviewing and multidisciplinary investigation can remain neutral and rigorous without expecting a child to immediately provide a complete, chronological, or consistent account.

Trauma, Dissociation & Parts-Based Survival

Understand dissociation as an adaptive response to overwhelming and inescapable trauma. This session will examine how trauma can affect memory, communication, identity, behavior, attachment, and a survivor’s ability to remain present—and introduce the ways parts-based survival and dissociative identity disorder may develop in the context of severe, chronic childhood trauma.

Revictimization & the “Second Wound”

Examine the ways survivors can be harmed again through disbelief, blame, minimization, rejection, and harmful responses from families, communities, professionals, and systems. Participants will consider how revictimization affects recovery, help-seeking, trust, and long-term well-being—and what meaningful support can look like.

Building a Stronger Systemic Response

Bring the learning together by examining what coordinated, survivor-centered response requires across child welfare, law enforcement, behavioral health, medical care, advocacy, and other child-serving systems. Participants will explore strategies for collaboration, information sharing, documentation, safety planning, and sustained support.

Across every session, one question will remain at the center:

What changes when we stop asking whether a child’s experience fits the trafficking story we already know—and begin asking what we may have been taught to overlook?
